Black and white photography has a certain timeless quality that captivates me. It seems that when colors are stripped away from an image, only the essence of the scene remains. Photography then becomes a game of contrasts between light and shadows.

However, that doesn't make black and white photography any easier than color photography. In fact, making good B&W photography takes practice and a keen eye for details. To inspire you to see the world in a different way, here is a selection of my favorite black and white Instagram accounts. So go ahead and have a look! Best Black and White Instagram Accounts

1. abu888

Japanese photographer Akihito Nagata got hooked on black and white photography because of Instagram. His images are sharp high contrast compositions of people in places with interesting architecture.

2. alan_schaller

Alan Schaller is a photographer and Leica ambassador based in London. His photos capture fleeting moments that are perfectly timed and framed, which makes them really stand out among the rest.

3. ayakovlevcom

Based in Moscow, dance photographer Alexander Yakovlev captures the powerful and graceful beauty of professional dancers. His images are just stunning and will surely inspire anyone interested in this field.

4. davidyarrow

David Yarrow is a British wildlife photographer, conservationist and author. He is renowned for capturing magical moments featuring mesmerizing creatures in a fresh and creative way. Another thing I like about his IG posts is the long captions offering some insight into his craft and his subjects.

5. goerss.de

Based in Berlin, Andrea Görß's IG feed is rich in crisp urban images with strong lines. Also, he only posts images shot and edited with his mobile phone, which makes his gallery all the more impressive.

You can really spend some time browsing this gallery. Featuring scenes of life in East Java, the photographer takes us along on an exploration of a fascinating culture. A must for travellers!

This black and white Instagram account features carefully crafted compositions that often mix people with impressive spaces. The images blend an air of classic nostalgia with scenes of modern life.

8. jasonmpeterson

Based in Chicago, Jason Peterson is an art director who only started shooting digital thanks to mobile photography and Instagram. Inspired by classic black and white photography, his images are usually dark, with high contrast and offering a timeless composition. And with over a million followers, he has one of the best Instagram feeds out there, B&W or not.

Jamal Burger is a street photographer based in Toronto, Canada. His work focuses on architecture, sports, and urban scenes. I also love his raw travel shots, which allow us to get a peek at how is life for locals in different destinations.

10. jl_saez

Spanish architect José Luis Saez usually captures high-contrast images of tiny people in huge places to create a sense of isolation. Also, he's one of those now rare people who shoots only with his iPhone.

11. kaiziehl

Capturing the beauty of architecture in urban landscapes, Kai Ziehl is a German artist based in Hamburg. The sharp lines and high contrast combined with lonely figures give a certain air of melancholy to his photos.

12. linstable_photographie

Jean-Michel Landon (AKA Linstable) is a social-humanist photographer who grew up in Créteil, a commune in the southeastern suburbs of Paris. Through his photography he documents the lives of the people who live in these blocks, more specifically the children and youth. His images are captivating and full of emotion.

With a keen eye for composition, dark tones and sharp edges, this is a great IG account to follow to see London in a different light.

This is the B&W Instagram account of Xavier Ritzi, one half of the travel duo behind the account @xkflyaway, so you can expect some sharp photos from exotic locations all around the world.

Nazaret Sánchez lives in Tarragona, Spain. After discovering Instagram, she started getting more and more into photography. And I am glad she did. Her images strike a playful balance between light and darkness, while featuring people in shadows or silhouettes to highlight the scale of the scene.

Featuring a checkboard layout of dark and light photos, the gallery of Gabriel Guerrero Caroca stands out even though it doesn't have a lot of photos yet. Also, some of his photos have a certain surreal mood. And I absolutely love all the kitty pictures!

17. simonchaudoir

Director of photography Simon Chaudoir enjoys creating playful behind the scenes stills as he goes around the world shooting music videos and commercials. The result is often humorous, but sometimes he adds a grim touch here and there.

18. thorben_ecke

Thorben Ecke is a photographer based in Hamburg who captures urban scenes beautifully framed in the architecture of the places he stumbles upon.
