Are truffles vegan?
Homemade chocolate truffles are unfortunately not vegan, as they contain dairy. However, with this super easy vegan truffles recipe, you're never going to miss the old recipe!
Why you'll love this simple and healthy vegan chocolate truffles recipe:
If you've ever had a chocolate truffle, then you know the decadence and richness I'm talking about. This is dessert recipe for the chocolate lovers at heart. It's like chocolate ganache but thicker, and rolled in cocoa powder for the ultimate chocolate dessert recipe.
What you're going to love about these vegan chocolate truffles is that they'reundetectablydairy free. That's right- you'd never know these homemade chocolate candies were vegan just by the taste and look.
What's more, we're only just2 main ingredients and 2additional ingredients to make this quick and easy vegan truffles recipe.
If you're looking for an edible Valentine's Day gift, then these chocolate truffles are it!
Just 4 ingredients:
To make vegan chocolate truffles, you really just need2 main ingredients:
- Coconut cream: You can also use full fat coconut milk. I give a few other options for coconut-free plant-based "creams" in the recipe card down below. Please do not use the coconut milk that you'd find in the refrigerated section at the store. This is too watered down and won't result in a delicious chocolate truffle!
- High quality vegan chocolate: I used dark chocolate from Pascha Organics, but some other options are Enjoy Life chocolate chips, Valrhona's Amatika chocolate, Artisan Kettle, and even the Trader Joe's brand.
Then the remaining 2 ingredients are to help make the texture of these vegan truffles even more rich, lush, and decadent:
- Vegan butter:Just two pats of vegan butter (such as Miyoko's) goes a long way in adding a super rich flavor to these chocolate truffles! If you can't find a vegan butter that you like, you can also use coconut oil.
- Cocoa powder: You can also use cacao powder, but keep in mind that your chocolate truffles might look more reddish in color, and will definitely have a richer taste!
How to make vegan truffles (overview)
For the full written instructions and ingredient measurements, see the bottom of this post in the recipe card. You can also hit the "jump to recipe" button at the top of this post! Here, we'll go over a brief overview of the steps, along with providing visuals for a better understanding of the recipe.
Here's how to make these super easy vegan truffles:
- Melt all of the ingredients together.
You'll do this in a small or medium sauce pan.
- Chill the chocolate truffle mixture.
It should be thick like ganache. You'll need about 2-3 hours for the mixture to set in the fridge.
- Scoop and shape the truffles.
I recommend using a cookie scoop for the easiest way to form these chocolate truffles! I also recommend scooping out all of the trufflesbeforeyou shape them. This means you won't have to touch the cookie scoop with chocolate coated hands!
- Roll the truffles in cocoa powder.
Or your desired coating!
- Serve and enjoy!
These vegan chocolate truffles will last at room temperature for up to an hour. Otherwise, I go over storage options below!
Different coatings for vegan truffles:
Now for the fun part: coating your homemade vegan chocolate truffles! I went with mainly the classic route: cocoa powder! But here are a few more fun options for topping your vegan truffles:
- Crushed or chopped nuts, such as hazelnuts, peanuts, or pecans
- Powdered freeze dried fruit, such as strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries
- Coconut flakes
- Vegan sprinkles
- Vegan decorating sugar
- Melted vegan white chocolate
- Vegan peanut butter or cashew butter glaze
- Flaked sea salt
Can I use this recipe to make vegan Ferrero Rocher?
This homemade vegan truffles recipe can definitely be used as the base for homemade Ferrero Rocher candies!
To make vegan Ferrero Rocher:
- Make the base recipe for these vegan chocolate truffles up until you've set the chocolate in the fridge.
- When you're ready to shape the chocolate truffles, scoop about 1/2 tbsp of chocolate, and place 1 hazelnut into the middle. Scoop another 1/2 tbsp of the chocolate mixture, and place it on top of the hazelnut.
- Roll the truffle into a ball, then roll it in crushed hazelnuts.
How long with homemade truffles last?
After you've made these homemade truffles, I actually recommend storing them in the fridge until you're ready to serve. When serving, you can leave these truffles at room temperature for up to an hour.
Typically with homemade truffles, you're able to store them covered at room temperature for up to 4 days. However, plant-based dairy-free creams are a bit less stable at room temperature, and tend to soften more quickly.
I recommend storing these vegan chocolate truffles in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
To make healthier sugar-free chocolate truffles:
If you're looking for a healthier chocolate dessert, then you can absolutely make these vegan truffles completely sugar free with two options. You'll swap out the vegan chocolate with:
- 100% cacao chocolate: I recommend Pascha Organics. This will have a really rich and dark chocolate flavor with absolutely no sweetness (maybe a hint from the coconut, but if you're used to eating sugar, then I don't recommend this option, as it will be a bit of a shock!). If you just want a cleaner vegan chocolate rather than sugar-free, you can use the 100% and add in up to 1/4 cup maple syrup to the chocolate mixture.
- Stevia-sweetened sugar free chocolate: There are a few brands on the market, but Pascha Organics is 100% vegan and uses stevia.
You're just going to absolutely love these easy vegan truffles! These chocolate truffles are just perfect for a quick and simple Valentine's Day or holiday treat, while still tasting amazing and so decadent!

Description
These vegan truffles are THE best homemade chocolate truffle recipe because you'd never know they're dairy free. Just 4 ingredients, and super easy for the best healthier vegan chocolate dessert!
- 3/4 cup (175 mL) coconut milk or coconut cream, from a can
- 1 1/2 cups (8 ounces) high quality vegan dark chocolate chips
- 2 tbsp vegan butter
- 2 tbsp high quality cocoa powder
Coatings:
- 1/3 cup high quality cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup crushed hazelnuts, peanuts, or almonds
- 1/3 cup ground freeze dried strawberries or raspberries
- 1/2 cup shredded coconut
- Please read through instructions before beginning.
- Prep: Measure out the chocolate truffle ingredients.
- Make the vegan chocolate truffles mixture: In a medium saucepan, heat the coconut milk, chocolate, and vegan butter on medium heat and stir to melt the chocolate. Keep stirring until the chocolate is melted and completely combined into the liquid mixture. Sift in the cocoa powder, and stir or whisk until there are no more clumps of cocoa powder.
- Chill the chocolate truffle batter: Pour the vegan truffle batter into a bowl, and allow the chocolate to cool at room temperature for 10-15 minutes (you don't want to stick a piping hot bowl into a cold fridge!). Then transfer the bowl to the fridge to set the chocolate truffle mixture for 2-3 hours, or until solidified by still slightly soft. Alternatively, you can speed up the process by chilling the mixture in the freezer for up to 1 hour, but be cause the mixture hasn't frozen!
- Shape the vegan truffles: Once the mixture is set, line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Use a small to medium cookie scoop (1-1.5 tbsp) to scoop the chocolate. Place each scoop onto the baking sheet (you'll round them in a second). You should yield about 14 truffles with a medium scoop. Once you've scooped the chocolate truffles, roll each truffle between clean palms to round the truffles.
- Coat the chocolate truffles: Immediately coat the truffles in your desired coatings by rolling each truffle in the cocoa powder, crushed nuts, etc. Place back onto the baking sheet. If your truffles have softened a bit from handling them, you can place the baking sheet into the freezer for 5-10 minutes to solidify again.
- Enjoy!Store the vegan truffles in the fridge until ready to serve. These chocolate truffles will last about 1 hour at room temperature before they become soft again and need re-chilling. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months!
Notes
Coconut milk alternatives: If you don't want to use coconut cream, you can use a plant based vegan unsweetened creamer, such as Elmhurst's unsweetened oat creamer, or use soy milk, such as by Forager Project, with 2 tbsp olive oil.
Sugar free chocolate truffles: To make low sugar or sugar free vegan chocolate truffles, swap in a sugar free chocolate, such as Pascha Organics' 100% cacao chocolate, or use a stevia sweetened one, such as Pascha Organics' sugar free chocolate chips.
